Contemporary altar breads from The Bellarmine Society are manufacturered in the US and are made from pure flour and water and carry ecclesiatical approval throughout North America. Low-gluten altar breads are manufactureded in Europe and are made with wheat starch and water and likewise carry ecclesiatical approval. Both types of breads conform strictly to the canonical requirements of the Catholic Church. The breads come in various sizes and designs. The breads are also available in clear “jar” containers with a resealable lid for easier pouring into the ciborium. Low-gluten breads are packaged in boxes with the breads sealed in one clear cellophane packet to ensure that there is no cross-contamination from the manufacturer to the bread’s end journey at the local parish. The breads generally have a long shelf life and can be refrigerated to ensure freshness over a longer period of time.
